Aksa Power Generation Ranks 224th in the Fortune 500 List

Aksa Power Generation A.Ş. is included in the Fortune 500 list. Could you provide a general performance evaluation for the company in 2019 in terms of production, investment, revenue, net sales, and profitability?

As Aksa Power Generation, we have long been the leader in the Turkish generator market. We are among Türkiye’s top 200 industrial enterprises and exporters. In 2019, we continued to lead the sector and raised standards through our initiatives. That year, we achieved a turnover of 1.5 billion TRY and recorded a growth rate of 15%. We aim to surpass this figure in 2020.

Which strategies are in place to continue double-digit growth? Can you elaborate on your globalization steps and structural reforms to become the leading company in the region?

In 2019, 70% of our turnover came from international sales. Expanding our influence in overseas markets plays a key role in our growth strategy. We continue our work to increase regional sales volume by expanding global reach while focusing on local markets. Each country is very important for our brand, and our goal is to provide the best service to our customers in every market we operate.

Aksa Power Generation exports products manufactured on three continents to 172 countries. In addition to our production facilities in Istanbul, China, and the United States, we have 19 offices and 4 representative offices across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. This positions us among the top five companies in the global generator sector. By 2025, we aim to become one of the world’s three largest generator manufacturers. Participating in trade fairs across four continents allows us to strengthen our industry connections and engage with potential customers. Recently, we have focused on potential opportunities in Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and South America.

Moreover, in 2019, we established a significant partnership to strengthen our position globally. We founded a joint company with Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi to produce high-tech generators based in the Asia-Pacific region. This collaboration combines Mitsubishi’s manufacturing technology with Aksa’s engineering and production capabilities, creating synergies that enable us to play a more active role in new projects. In 2020, we executed several high-profile reference projects worldwide, including metro and airport projects in Europe, telecom, airport, and hotel projects in Africa, data center projects in Asia-Pacific, and university and hospital projects in the Middle East.

How is Aksa Power Generation implementing its growth plans in the countries it operates in, and what steps are being taken to build a global brand image?

We value all the markets we operate in and recognize their unique dynamics, which help us improve our production and sales capabilities. Aksa Power Generation aims to be among the top three companies in each market. With a wide range of products and applications from individual use to large-scale projects, we have quickly become a global brand in the generator sector. Furthermore, as the only generator brand accepted into Türkiye’s prestigious “Turquality” program, we have taken another step toward stronger global presence. Being active in multiple markets also allows us to respond effectively to sectoral changes and transformations.

The global energy sector is undergoing significant change. Climate change and its impacts are driving the shift from fossil fuels to renewable and clean energy technologies, prioritizing sustainable energy production. Countries and companies are shaping their future plans around this transformation. This shift will also transform all energy-related products and technologies, including generators. Currently, diesel-powered generators dominate globally, but low-emission natural gas generators are rapidly gaining market share. Hybrid solutions combining diesel with solar energy and energy storage are also increasing. Over the next decade, generator manufacturers will likely see a different product portfolio than today. As both a domestic and global manufacturer, Aksa Power Generation is planning to manage this transformation and strengthen its market position.

Can you elaborate on your R&D activities and Türkiye’s potential in producing special and high value-added products? How is Aksa Power Generation addressing environmental sustainability and natural resource conservation?

To provide high-quality and sustainable service to our customers and to keep pace with future technologies, we continue to invest in R&D. Correct selection and usage of generators is increasingly important both professionally and privately for energy continuity. To meet this need effectively, being open to innovation and mastering current technology is crucial. We rapidly adapt to changing sector demands and develop solutions with a flexible approach.

We prioritize energy efficiency and produce sector-leading products and systems. We are among the first manufacturers in Türkiye to produce natural gas generators and are positioning ourselves as pioneers in hybrid solutions, including cogeneration, trigeneration, and energy storage. Our R&D investments focus on generators with lower fuel consumption, reduced noise levels, and environmentally friendly design.

Additionally, we have achieved the status of an R&D Center under the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s R&D and Design Center Program, which supports our innovative projects. We are also rapidly developing a fully equipped R&D and innovation center.

How do you plan to structure human resources and workforce after the pandemic?

In line with our new strategies, we contribute to employment in Türkiye and globally in every market we operate. We offer significant opportunities for experienced and well-trained personnel. Through digital transformation, we were the first generator manufacturer in Türkiye to start e-commerce. Currently, our home-use generators are sold via shopaksa.com.tr. Initially, we focused on optimizing domestic supply processes, but we plan to expand product variety and eventually operate globally through online sales. We aim to leverage our overseas offices and stock availability, especially in Europe, to actively implement e-commerce internationally. We believe this will have a positive impact on employment, as increased online sales combined with field support will yield beneficial results. Our HR processes and initiatives continue at full speed.

What solutions can be offered regarding Türkiye’s challenges with financing, taxes, high interest rates, regulations, and exchange rate fluctuations? How do you see competitiveness evolving today, and what opportunities exist?

We are in a period where companies prepared for digital transformation and adaptable to changing conditions succeed more. Quick action and agility are crucial to differentiating in competition. We manage our production capacity across multiple global locations, providing supply and inventory advantages for our sales and distribution points. Operating in 172 countries allows us to leverage market diversification. We provide integrated solutions and manage the production-to-delivery process digitally, addressing customer needs comprehensively. We adopt a customer-focused model that enhances loyalty, using our digital infrastructure to offer the best alternatives for each client.

Although the global generator market was expected to shrink by 30% in 2020 due to COVID-19, investments in data centers and healthcare accelerated. Aksa Power Generation developed products for these sectors and ensured rapid delivery of required generators. For instance, we delivered 10 generators totaling 20 MW for two field hospitals in Istanbul within 10 days, completing the project in 45 days. Additionally, we supplied hospital projects in over 50 countries, including Kazakhstan and Belgium.

What are your company’s goals and investment plans for 2020 and beyond?

Our main focus is on international growth. We continue to invest and form partnerships in Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Americas, and Europe to strengthen and expand our global market position. We are also growing our e-commerce operations, aiming to more than double portable generator sales by year-end. We plan to launch our online platform in foreign markets, starting with countries where we have offices and stock availability, primarily in Europe.

Over the next three years, the data center market is expected to create a $2 billion generator market, from which we aim to capture a significant share. Additionally, we have started providing global services in cogeneration systems, where energy efficiency reaches up to 90%, beginning with Türkiye.
